Censors approve bestiality film after banning gay sex film
Australia’s Classification Board has allowed a film depicting real sex between men and donkeys to screen at festivals just two years after it blocked the screening of a film depicting real sex between men

Australian censors have allowed the screening of a documentary that contains footage of real sex between men and donkeys just two years after they refused a permit to screen a movie that contained real sex between men.

The documentary Donkey Love, which explores a Colombian folk tradition of men having sex with donkeys, was approved by the Australian Classification Board for screening at this year’s Sydney Underground Film Festival and Melbourne Underground Film Festival.

According to the filmmakers, ‘Donkey Love is a documentary that introduces the unknown tradition of Colombians having sex and falling in love with donkeys.’

‘It starts off as a rite of passage ritual that fathers initiate with their sons and is carried on into their adulthood where men often end-up cheating on their wives with donkeys.


‘Colombians believe that boys should practice having sex with donkeys to prepare themselves for women, that it makes their penises bigger and also that it prevents them from becoming homosexuals.’

The Classification Board did not even ask to see the film before granting it an exemption to screen at the festivals, despite bestiality being a criminal offense in Australia.

However in 2010 the same Classification Board found that the Bruce La Bruce gay Zombie porn film LA Zombie was ‘likely to cause offense to a reasonable adult,’ despite the board having previously given a number of films containing real heterosexual sex ratings such that they could be rented by adults from video stores in the past.

The Melbourne Underground Film Festival went ahead and screened the film anyway, resulting in a police raid on the festival director's home and a fine of $750.

LA Zombie was the only festival film during financial year 2010-2011 that the board refused a screening permit to.


The board previously gave an outright ban on 2003’s Larry Clark film Ken Park which contained a real threesome between two male and one female adult actors who’s characters were supposed to be teenagers.

The board’s decision to refuse a permit to screen LA Zombie lead to accusations of a homophobic bias, with three official complaints over the decision lodged with the board.
